The West Arms enjoys an idyllic setting in the foothills of the Berwyn Mountain a rural paradise - a historic 16th Century building with considerable character. If you had to conjure up all dreamlike images of the perfect stay they all seem to converge on The West Arms. Owned by Geoff and Gill Leigh-Ford experienced hoteliers at home and abroad with many successful ventures behind them they have recently returned (2011). br / br / br / br / On arrival the busiest event on the road is often the leisurely stroll of a pheasant the loudest noise is the wind in the trees the rushing of the river or sheep bleating on a neighbouring hillside. br / br / br / br / One of our lovely guests described his recent stay (October 2012) as follows The West Arms has its own special quiet - a drowsy contented peace made of up centuries of just being there - occasionally stirred by the crackling fall of a log on the fire distant laughter from the bar - and the warmest of welcomes from the staff ending with a heavenly sleep in a snug bedroom. Often people who come just for a weekend want to stay forever idling time away (which is very slow and in infinite supply along the Ceiriog Valley) and given the good ales in the bar congenial conversations with locals and staff plus the finest food conjured up by the genius culinary magicians oaths of allegiance to this perfect principality of peace where contentment reigns also known as The West Arms in Llanarmon DC . br / br / br / br / We are fortunate to have celebrity Chef Grant Williams (ITV Britain s Best Dish finalist) as a key member of the team - he is passionate about his role as Head Chef - he places his love of cooking at The West Arms almost as high as his love for his family and it shows in his consummate skill in producing excellent dishes using locally sourced food (Lady Kenyon of Greddington s Home Grown Fruit and Veg Josh Williams Free Range Eggs Dave Keegan of Llanrhaedr ym Mochant s Welsh Lamb and Beef and Rosie Davies edible flowers.

The White Lion Royal Hote is located in the centre of town (renovated june 05) this 4 STAR WTB and AA INN offers comfortable rooms and great breakfasts. It is convenient for all the recreational amenities (leisure centre swimming pool) and outdoor activities (wind surfing white water rafting golf rambling) offered in Bala. It is just a five minute walk from Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) or a thirty minute drive to the coast. All rooms are en-suite and have DVD TV s plus tea and coffee facilities. This is the best known of all the hotels and inns in Bala with its central and prominent position on the main street. Its origins as a hotel are unknown but the tablet above the front door proclaims that the present building (with some alterations) has been there since 1759.George Borrow (famous Welsh writer 1803-1881) stayed during his travels through the area and penned his famous book entitled Wild Wales. It is no wonder that he returned here when we read his account of the breakfast that was served to him:What a breakfast! Pot of hare ditto of trout pot of prepared shrimps dish of plain shrimps tin of sardines beautiful beefstake eggs muffin large loaf and butter not forgetting capital tea. Queen Victoria came to Bala in 1889 and during her stay at the Robertsons country seat at Pale Llandderfel a few miles east of the town she purchased goods in three shops and as a result they were granted permission to call themselves Purveyors by Royal Warrant. The main bar is a popular haunt of locals and tourists and hosts occasional traditional music performances. The snug BAR is one of the smallest bars in Wales dating from the hotel s days as a posting house and is also popular with locals. The structure of the building is similar to that as described by George Borrow.
