Local Information
Armagh is a city in Northern Ireland and is called Ard Macha in Irish which means The Height of Macha. It is Northern Irelands least populated city and forms the Newry and Armagh constituency along with part of the Newry and Mourne district. The citys name refers to the 600BC Irish Queen Macha and reflects the fact that the city developed on a hill overlooking a fort. Navan Fort or Emain Macha was at the edge of the city and the settlement developed around it. Armagh has a claim at being the oldest settlement in Ireland and it also has a Georgian area of importance to the citys heritage. The Armagh Planetarium was established in 1968 to support the work of Armagh Observatory which was founded in 1790 and is now a modern astronomical research instutute. The public library is also a notable building and stands on Cathedral Hill, close to St Patricks Church of Ireland Cathedral. The library has an abundance of 17th and 18th century English books among which is Jonathan Swifts own copy of the first edition of Gullivers Travels. The satirists manuscript corrections can also be seen. Armagh has always had strong links with education and was once referred to as the city of saints and scholars
