Local Information
Situated to the north of the West Pennine Moors, Blackburn is the main part of the Blackburn with Darwen borough in Lancashire. Its location in the East Lancashire Hills means the town centre is in a depression surrounded by hills which include Billinge Hill in Witton County Park, Great Hill, Winter Hill, Green Hill and Pendle Hill. The River Blakewater gives the town its name and runs undrground through the town centre between Blackburn Cathedral and the bus station. The geology of the region enables Blackburn to benefit from various the industries of coal mining, millstone and lime stone quarrying and iron ore mining. The towns sporting pursuits are topped off by the Premier League team Blackburn Rovers FC whose home ground is Ewood Park. The team has had varied success including relegation to Division One in the late 1990s then winning promotion in 2001. Shrewd player purchases including Alan Shearer and managers such as Kenny Dalgleish have contributed to Blackburn Rovers winning the FA cup on 6 occasions. Aside from football, attractions in Blackburn include the Lewis Textile musuem, Witton Country Park, Corporation Park and Thwaites Brewery, cask ale brewers for nearly 200 years
