Local Information
Bury is located between Rochdale and Bolton just north of Greater Manchester and emerged as a mill town during the Industrial Revolution, focussing mainly on textile manufacture. Other industries that thrived during that time were papermaking, calico printing and light engineering. The Canterbury is derived from the Proto Indo European word for stronghold or fort and has previously been called Buri or Byri. Bury still holds a traditional market and Bury Market is famous for Black Pudding and tripe although the latter has reduced in popularity over the decades. The town football club Bury Town FC has had the likes of Lee Dixon and Dean Keily on the squad and also has an impressive Youth Centre of Excellence. Household names such as Eddie Izzard and Steve Coogan have appeared on stage at The Met arts centre and the Bury Art Gallery and Museum features Victorian art and works by Turner. Other attractions include the East Lancashire Railway which is a heritage railway and Peel Tower on Harcles Hill which is dedicated to Sir Robert Peel. Hoards of visitors climb to the tower on Good Friday since the Harcles hill is historically said to be strikingly similar to the hill Jesus climbed before his crucifixtion. Notable individuals associated with Bury include Manchester United captain Gary Neville, Matt Holland of Charlton Athletic and world cycling champion Reg Harris. Bury is also the birthplace of Cherie Booth - wife of Prime Minister Tony Blair, Royle Family actor Ralf Little, HearSay singer Suzanne Shaw and Gemma Atkinson - glamour model and actress
