Local Information
Situated only 16km from the Scottish border, Carlisle is the traditional county town of Cumberland, northwest England. Most of north east Cumberland has a Cumbrian dialect, the Carlisle dialect is a diasystem of this. Evidence of the citys Roman settlement was recently discovered and the pieces are now displayed in the Tullie House Musuem. The architecture remaining from the citys historical past is in a fairly compact layout. The historical centre includes a museum, semi intact city walls, a cathedral, the citadel towers or former law courts and Carlisle castle. The latter was built in 1092 by William Rugus and once served as a prison for Mary, Queen of Scots. The 19th and early 20th centuries saw Carlisle develop as an industrial city with textile mills, food manufacturers and engineering works emerging in mainly the Denton Holme, Caldewgate and Wapping areas. Carlisle United FC represents the city in the Coca Cola Championship English football league. The teams performances have been disappointing at times and combined with other recent misfortunes such as flooding, locals began to blame events on a 16th century curse. The curse was reportedly invoked by Archbishop Dunbar of Glasgow because of thefts and pillaging carried out by cross border families, also known as Border Reivers. A 14 tonne granite artwork commissioned for the millenium celebrations and situated in the city is inscribed with the words of the curse
