Remains discovered in the area show that Crawley was populated by Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age settlers. The arrival of the London, Brighton and Southcoast railway in 1848 led to the real growth of the town. Its position on the turnpike to Brighton also help boost its population. Developing as a new town in 1947, it was based on three communities - Crawley itself and included Ifleild and Three Bridges.
