Local Information
Dorking is a market town that prospered from its positioning as a staging post for the route to Brighton during the 18th century. The White Horse Inn which developed during this time still dominates the centre of Dorking and was previously the site of buildings belonging to the Knights Templar and the Knights of St John. Tucked under the North Downs, the River Mole runs to the north of Dorking. The UKs largest vineyard - Denbies Vineyard, is situated on the left bank and on the right is Britains first County Park - Box Hill. The Hill is owned by the National Trust and due to rare species of Orchid found in the area, it has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Dorking is also proximate to The Surrey Hills, the highest point of which is Leith Hill. Just south of the town is the discovery site of the a species of fish eating dinosaur, its skeleton is on display in the Natural History Museum in London. Culturally, Dorking is known globally for its antiques dealers and it has recently benefited from a state of the art cinema and theatre complex. Among Dorkings famous residents are Peter Andre and Katie Price - aka Jordan and author Benjami Disraeli. The late Oliver Reed lived in the nearby village of Oakwoodhill and the birthplace of Laurence Olivier is marked by a blue plaque in Wathen Road
