Local Information
Dover in Kent is a major channel port situated only 21 miles from Calais thus making it one of the UKs busiest cross-Channel ports, with 18 million passengers each year. Regular ferry services operate from Dover to Calais and Dunkerque with a regular catamaran service also going to Boulogne. Dover is famous for its white cliffs which are made from chalk and are the reason for Britains nickname of Albion (meaning white). Dover has been strategically important throughout history because of its proximity to France. The towns of Buckland and Maxton lie to the north and south repectively. Its position made it vulnerable and Dover has been associated with Stuarts, Tudors through to Anglo-Saxons and Romans. This rich history means there are countless attractions to visit in Dover starting with Dover Castle or Saxon Shore Way and ending with Russell Gardens or Seafront Promenade perhaps taking in Fort Burgoyne along the way. Residents of note include pop mogul Simon Cowell, singer Joss Stone and former PE teacher turned author Jeffery Archer
Dover is part of Dover district which is made up of two other towns, Deal and Sandwich, all of which used to be independant boroughs before merging. To the north west of the town is Buckland, slightly further north are the towns of River and Temple Ewell. Maxton lies to the south east towards the North Downs Way
