Local Information

The county town of the former county of Dunfrieshire, Dumfries is in south west Scotland and sits close to the Solway Firth near the mouth of the River Nith. The town has many associations with Robert Burns who lived there in the 1790s, both his homes (Burns House and Ellisland) survive and can be visited. The Robert Burns Centre located in an 18th century watermill is futher homage to the poet. The Dumfries Museum and the Camera Obscura are further attractions whilst across the 15th century Devorgilla Bridge is Dumfries oldest house - The Old Bridge House which dates back to 1660. Dumfries high street once enjoyed aesthetic recognitions from Sctoland in Bloom and is the site of many historical, social and commercial centres of the town.
