Local Information
Known as a market town since Saxon times, the conversion of its Polytechnic to a University means it is now sometimes referred to as a Universtity town. If interests in the town are more cultural then the abundance of Victorian architecture is sufficient for any tourist. The most eye-catching landmark is the Victoria Tower on Castle Hill, just one of the many structures in Huddersfield that mean the city has the third highest total of listed buildings in the UK. Other attractions include the colonnaded Huddersfield railway station in St Georges Square described as one of the best early railway stations in England by Sir Nikolaus Pevsner
The Huddersfield Broad Canal and Huddersfield Narrow Canal are both navigable and wind around the south side of the city. Numerous long-running television series, such as Last of the Summer Wine, Where the Heart is and the League of Gentlemen, have been filmed in and around Huddersfield. Several cultural events also take place in the town- Festival of Light, Caribbean Carnival, Pink Picnic and Jamaican Independent Day are few examples
