Local Information
The city of Kingston Upon Hull is usually abbreviated to Hull, mainly to avoid confusion with Kingston Upon Thames. It is near the east coast of England, on the north bank of the Humber estuary, spreading across both sides of the River Hull. Muchos the city is at or below sea level leaving it increasingly at risk of flooding due to global warming. Because of its docks, industry and proximity to continental Europe, the city sustained particularly significant damage in bombing raids during WWII. It was the most bombed city in the UK outside of London. The city was rebuilt in the years following the Second World war and it is now a very busy port. Hull sees 18.5 percent of all UK imports and is home to some major industries and well loved British brands such as Humbrol and Swith and Nephew. Most of the city lies at or below sea level and with the city centre close to the Humber, Hull is roughly semi-cicular in shape
Although classed as a city, Hull in fact has no cathedral but does contain Holy Trinity Church which is the largest Parish Church in England. Due to the strong links with seafaring, there are also several seamens missions and churches. A little known fact is that Hull is the only city in the UK with its own telephone network company. Evidence of this is seen in the distinctive cream coloured telephone boxes throughout the city. Hull also has plenty to offer culturally, from the extensive museum and visitor quarter to the the classical music of the Hull Sinfonietta and Hull Philharmonic Orchestra. The Marina area hosts the annual Hull Jazz Festival in early August which is followed by Sea Fever Festival then the Hull fair - Europes largest travelling funfair. With three main theatres, a lively nightlife and numerous live music venues (such as The Adelphi), the city caters for most needs
The city boundaries are tightly drawn and exclude many of the nearby villages that are part of the larger metropolitan area of which Cottingham is the largest. Within its boundaries lie the suburbs of Marfleet, Sutton Ings, Sutton-on-Hull, Bransholme and Newland
