Local Information
Derwent Water, one of the Lake Districts most picturesque lakes, is just south of this market town. Keswick is also only a short distance from Bessenthwaite Lake. 13th Century records indicate that the town acted as a centre for cheese, a fact reflected in its name, Cese-wick. Kewsick if full of interesting historical facts, even the local tourist information centre has historical interest. It is located in the fascinating Moot Hall which used to be the town hall. Tourism is at the heart of the majority of Kewsick businesses, however the graphite mining and resulting pencil industry is still going strong. The Cumberland Pencil Museum and the worlds largest pencil can be visited in Keswick. The towns annual film festival is another big attraction, more that 3000 visitors attended in 2006. The annual beer festival and jazz festival also draw in the crowds, as does the annual Christian Convention taking place over the last three weeks of the summer. Known as the Keswick Convention, the event has run since 1875. Continuing the Christian experience in Keswick is Castlerigg Manor, a Catholic youth centre. For cultural needs, Keswick is home to the Cars of the Stars Motor Museum, a collection of celebrity cars from television and film. Alternatively. Keswick Museum and Art Gallery is a Victorian museum with the Musical Stones of Skiddaw on display. A little known fact, Keswick is the first place in the UK where police used riot gear
