Local Information
Forget coal slags, Get Carter and the bleak days of yore. Newcastle has tidied itself up, put on its best glad rags and invited the rest of the world round for drinks. Geordies know how to party, and they do so with an irrepressible energy that borders on the irresponsible. Situated on the north side of the River Tyne, Newcastle is a member of the English Core Cities Group. The city was founded by the Roman Emperor Hadrian in 2nd Century AD and Hadrian's Wall is still visible in part sof the city. This stone and turf fortification was built across the width of Britain to prevent military raids from tribes to the north of England. The Geordie dialect can be traced back to Pld Norse and Old English with certain words recognisable in modern Norwegian. The east of England trading rights were bestowed Upon Newcastle by King Charles, an act that helped the city and surrounding neighbours Sunderland and Gateshead to prosper
Newcastle has extensive neoclassical architecture dating largely from the 1830s. These structures developed largely by Richard Grainger and John Dobson have recently been restored. Part of Grainger town was converted into Eldon Square shopping centre in the 1960s but still has one side of the original Eldon Square. Grey Street which curves towards the river Tyne was voted as the 2005 finest street in England by BBC Radio listeners. The Byker Wall designed by Ralph Erskine is a Grade II listed building and on the UNESCO list of outsanding 20th Century buildings. Newcastle also has a strong sporting focus with Newcastle United Football team boasting players like Englands Micheal Owen. The Newcastle Viper ice hockey team and Newcastle Eagles basketball team all compete well in their leagues. The city also hosts the BUPA Great North Run annually, it is the worlds largest half marathon. Renowned for being a fun-loving city, Newcastle has seen a recent growth in theatre culture. The Theatre Royal has hosted a season of performances from the Royal Shakespeare Company for over 25 years. The Newcastle Town Moor sees The Hoppings, reputedly Europes largest travelling fair, annually and with the citys lively music scene and numerous shopping centres, there is plenty to do in Newcastle
