Local Information
A small resort town in Argyll and Bute, Scotland and despite its size can be crowded by up to 25,000 people during tourist season. The Oban Tourist Information Centre is housed in an old Church of Sctoland building. The towns attractions consist of the Cathedral of St Columba, Oban Distillerie and the sights of Kilmarntin Glen can be taken in whilst using Oban as a base. In 2003, Oban hosted the Royal National Mod making it the second occasion the town has hosted the Gaelic festival. The town was an inportant base both during WWII and the Cold War. Merchant and Royal Navy ships used its port while the Gallanch bay provided sheltered accomodation for the first Transatlantic Telephone Cable (TAT-1) known as the Hot Line between US and USSR presidents. To the north of the town lies Glencruittein, Pennyfuir with Soroba and Kilbride to the south
