Local Information
Penrith is a market town in Cumbria situated in the Eden Valley, just north of the River Eamont and under 5km outside of the Lake District. The ruins of Penrith Castle can be seen from the tarin station which is adjacent to the site. English Heritage runs the castle as a visitor attraction. the organisation also protects the ancient henge sites of Mayburgh Henge and King Arthurs Round Table which are situated to the south of the town. The Clock Tower in the town centre is in honour of Philip Musgrave or Eden Hall. Being a small town, mainly reliant on agriculture, Penriths nightlife is centred around public houses. These range from traditional small pubs to larger chains with late licenses. Traditional meals such as Cumberland Sausages and Lamb Henry can be sampled in many of the pubs located in the town centre. The town dialect known as Penrithian is a diasystem of the Cumbrian Dialaect that is spoken in and around the Penrith and Eden district. Penrith itself is made up of the areas of Castletown, Townhead, the New Streets, Scaws, Carleton, Pategill and Wetheriggs. North of the town is Plumpton with Shap to the south and Keswick and Langwathby to the west and east consecutively
