Local Information
Particularly known for hillwalking, this largely Victorian town is a popular tourist resort surrounded by mountains such as Ben Y Vrackie. Its success as a tourist centre started with a visit to the nearby Blair castle by Queen Victoria in 1842 and was boosted by the arrival of the railway. Although Pitlochry has retained many of its stone built Victorian buildings, its main appeal is its setting which caters well for angling and boating interests. The two whiskey distilleries are also an attraction, Edradour is the smallest distillery in Scotland and Balir Atholl which dates back to 1798. One of the local pubs also has a microbrewery. The local power station dam has a viewing station from which fish can be seen leaping from weir to weir within the 310 metre salmon ladder. On a cultural note, the town has a small repertoire theatre, Pitlochry Festival Theatre, whose ensemble company is the largest in Scotland and also boasts JK Rowling as a patron
