Local Information
Shrewsbury is located on the River Severn in Shropshire, less than ten miles east of the Wesh border. It has an historic town centre with medieval street patterns, small passages and many street names have remained unchanged for centuries. Some of the pubs have been public houses since first opening, the oldest of these is Golden Cross which was established in 1428. The Quarry in the town centre is a popular attraction with its scenic gardens and Shrewsbury is known as the town of flowers. It hosts the annual two day event, the Shrewsbury Flower Show which is one of the largest and oldest British agricultural events. The town is also host to a number of other large events such as the West Mid Show, Shrewsbury International Music Festival, the Shrewsbury Folk Festival and the Shrewsbury Summer Season. The local football team, Shrewsbury Town FC competes in League Two of the English League. Their most notable recent victory was in 2003 when they knocked the premiership side Everton FC out of the FA Cup during a third round tie. Famous Shrewsbury residents have included or still include, writer and actor Michael Palin, biologist Charles Darwin, the late Radio 1 DJ John Peel and golfer Sandy Lyle
