Local Information
Stroud is located at the Five Valleys, below the Cotswold Hills and is consequently surrounded in all directions by the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Its boundaries do not spread far but include the towns of Uplands, Pagan Hill, Cashes Green and Ebley. On its west, it is passed by the Cotswold Way path. Stroud also has a reputation for being a cafe town and most vistors comment on the towns laid back air. The towns famous residents are mainly authors and artists includng Jilly Cooper, Damien Hurst and Katie Fforde perhaps drawn by relaxed atmosphere in Stroud. There is also a significant bohemian community including a few New Age types, Stroud was the site of the UKs first purpose-built cohousing community. Stratford park lies on the fringes of the town, initially a small stately home, it now houses a leisure centre and a museum of the history and culture of the Stroud valleys
