Local Information

Truro is the only city in the county or Cornwall and grew to be a commercial centre thanks in part to it being a port. It later became a stannary town and therefore was of importance in the mining industry. Truro is a city well known for its gothic revival style cathedral which took 30 years to build and also has numerous buildings of interest including examples of Georgian architecture. It is the most southerly city in the UK and is the confluence of the river Kenwyn and the river Allen which form the river Truro. Surrounding Truro are a number of protected natural areas such as Pencalenick - historic parklands and the ornamental landscape of Trelissick Garden and Tregothnan. It is a popular destination for nearby residents and tourists due to its abundance of speciality shops, bitros and weekly markets as well as the many open areas and parks in the city. Truro competes for Britain in Bloom recognition from April each year with floral displays dotted across the city and also has a continental market with food and crafts from across Europe. Famous Trurorians, as the residents are known, have included West Ham United footballer Matthew Etherington, England and London Wasps fullback Tom Voyce, Roger Meddows-Taylor, the drummer from the band Queen and the Titanics oldest remaining survivor Barbara Joyce West
