Local Information
Dubbed the Merrie City in the Middle Ages, Wakefield is located by the River Calder. Its name is most likely to have evolved from Old English for wacu meaning wake or watch and the word feld meaning feld, ie a field in which a wake is held. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Wakefield had a healthy cloth industry with its own Piece Hall but other industries also thrived. Textile mills were located around the river Calder, a large glass works was in the east of the town and there were also collieries and engineering works with strong links to mining. The industries declined and many areas became deprived however the city is making improvements. Wakefield holds an annual Rhubarb Festival and has a lively nightlife, especially around the Westgate area. Attractions include the Sandal Castle ruins and Pugneys Country Park
