Local Information
Whitby, once the 6th largest Port in the UK, is dominated by the cliff-top ruins of a beautiful 13th century Abbey. This historic North Yorkshire town is the setting for Bram Stokers chilling novel Dracula. Located at the mouth of the River Esk, the area is rich in fossilised remains, entire skeletons of pterydactyls have been found and ammonite fossils can be found on the sea shore. Black amber or jet found in the cliffs around Whitby was used in jewellery making since the Roman times. Whitby jet was most popular during the 19th century especially when Queen Victoria chose it for her jewellery for mourning. The towns location gives it strategic importance for shipping to the rest of Europe and it also boasts a high quality fish market. Tourism also plays an important part in the towns economy, Whitby was listed by Which Holiday magazine as the best seaside resort in 2006. The town hosts a number of events throughout the year including the Penny Hedge ceremony on the eve of Ascension day, Whitby Folk Week, Whitby Gothic Weekend, Musicport world music festival and Whitby Regatta which has grown from a rowing event to include spectacles such as police dog demonstrations and displays by the Red Arrows
