Wigan is a large town in the North West of England, in the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester, lying in the historic county of Lancashire. The first settlers in the area were Brigants, by the Industrial Revoluation Wigan was mainly a mill town and became a centre for textile manufcature. Wigans main sports teams are Wigan Athletic (football) and Wigan Warriors (rugby league). The two teams now share the JJB Stadium. Situated on the banks of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, Wigan Pier is one of the north wests favourite visitor attractions. The working mill steam engine, also on the banks of the canal, is further attraction for visitors. Wigan has had associations with popular culture for much of its recent history. The dancing troupe -The Eight Lancashire Lads, developed in Wigan and gave Charlie Chaplin his professional debut. More recently, The Verve and Starsailor have emerged from Wigan and become internationally known. Other notable people associated with Wigan include actor Sir Ian McKellen, Coronation Streets Jennifer Moss, footballer Leon Osman and former Great Britain rugby league captain Andrew Farrell
