Local Information
Wolverhampton is a city in the English West Midlands, traditionally part of the county of Staffordshire. The city was named after Lady Wulfruna, who founded the town in 985, its name came from Anglo-Saxon Wulfrunehcantun meaning Wulfruns high or principal enclosure or farm. Many buildings and firms in Wolverhampton are named after her. Its name is often abbreviated to Wton or Wolves. The city councils motto is Out of darkness, cometh light. Although some of the city districts fall within the area referred to as the Black Country, the city centre itself is outside this area. Wolverhampton became a thriving market town by the 13th century and from the 16th century it had numerouse metal industries for lock and key making, iron and brass working. A statue in memory of Prince Albert stands in Queen Square, the unveiling of which (in 1866) brought Queen Elizabeth to the town. It is sometiems simply referred to as the Man on the Horse. Wolverhampton is only one of a few UK cities with a tram transportation service, it also has miles of canal networks that include the BIrmingham Canal and the Shropshire Union Canal. Musical links with the city include Slade, Babylon Zoo, Beverley Knight and Goldie, the city also boasts numerous music venues and theatres. The local footbal team, Wolverhampton Wanderers FC (better known as Wolves) is one of the oldest English football clubs.
