Kendal in the South Lakelands is great for gorging on the local Kendal Mint Cake. From there travel northwards on your journey through the Lakes. Keswick sits upon Derwent Water with the stunning Fells in the background. Cultured visitors can enjoy Keswick Theatre by The Lake and visit Castlerigg Stone Circle. Ambleside sits between the fells from which is a great place from which to walk. Bowness-On-Windermere joins on to Windermere and both are sublime, the perfect place eat in the quaint eateries, and to explore the lakes.
Brockhole The Lake District Visitor Centre is a must House, Gardens, and watersports. Coniston is where Donald Campbell broke the World Water Speed Record and died on Coniston Water trying to break his own record. Coniston Boating Centre has boats for rent (although the speed limit is 10 knots rather than 260M mph) and cycles to hire.
