The Northumberland National Park has wide open spaces made up of moor and grasslands, and rolling wind swept hills. There are grazing Cheviot sheep among the wild flowers, babbling brooks, streams and rivers, and above all, tranquillity.  This is a land of scattered village pubs and wayside inns, a place to get away from the crowds.  In summer it is a place of peaceful beauty but who wouldn't be uplifted by its delights in winter when snow covers pre Roman Conquest Hill Forts and rivers and streams can become raging torrents.

Cycle or walk along side fascinating Hadrian's Roman Wall with its informative museums and forts.  Archaeologists are still working here and new discoveries are often made.

Visit Rothbury a small market town with shops, and golf, bowling and cricket clubs.  Rothbury has a pipe band which you may be able to hear locally or at Rothbury's annual music festival.  There is a car park near the River Coquet which flows through the middle of this town.  You can walk the nearby wild rugged Simonside Hills. Late summer is a good time when the hills are heather clad.  Views are spectacular towards the Cheviot Hills in the distance.

Northumberland National Park is a haven for wildlife.  Droppings of the cat sized pine marten have been noted in Kidland Forest. Look out for grouse, roe deer, red squirrels and adders along with a good variety of birds.  Take the scenic forest drive and visit Kielder Water where you can hire boats and canoes.  Visit the castle visitor centre or maybe take an orienteering course. There is something for all the family at Craigside House, Morpheth.  The grounds here are described by the National Trust as "challenging" and the house is known for its innovative gadgets.
