York Bed and Breakfast, Cheap Hotel and Guest House Accommodation

York known as the Chocolate City is home to Rowntrees and Terrys confectionery works. It has a long history and was founded by the Romans. Renamed Jorvik when the Vikings captured the city in 866 AD. One of 2 Church of England provinces the city is home to York Minster a must see tourist attraction. In recent times York is famous for its Railway History and is a thriving student city due to The University of York. In 2007 York was awarded European Tourism City of the Year.

York

For nearly 2000 years York has been the capital of the north, and it played a central role in British history under the Romans, Saxons and Vikings. York is prone to flooding from the River Ouse due to the citys location in the Vale of York - a flat arable area surrounded by the Pennines, the Wolds, the North York Moors. The University of York, on the city outskirts, was formerly an autonomous college of the University of Leeds and now also has a branch of the College of Law. Yorks economy is reliant on tourism as well as service based industries but the city prospered in the past from chocolate manufacture. Household names such as Nestle Rowntree, Terrys, British Sugar and Norwich Union were all major employers. The latter still remains as a big employer although many of the companies have moved elswhere. York is a great city in which to amble through the spectacular Gothic cathedral, medieval city walls, tangle of historic streets and glut of pubs. Yorvik, the Railway Museum and the city walls are all large tourist attractions in this University City. York Racecourse is a major UK horseracing venue and hosts the Ebor Handicap Meeting every August. The city also has football team, York City FC which competes in the Nationwide Conference and the York City Knights rugby league side. The current England manager Steve McClaren is from York as is actress Dame Judi Dench
