Gillingham is the most northerly town in the county of Dorset and is located in the Blackmore Vale area. It was established by Saxons but there is evidence of 2nd and 3rd century Roman settlement. In the Middle Ages, the town was the seat of a royal hunting lodge, the lodge was destroyed by Edward III in the 14th century. Historically, Gillingham has had varied trade starting with farming then silk mills in the 18th century before the arrival of the railway in the 1850s. with the railway emerged new industry such as brick and cheese making, printing and soap production. The rail links connecting the town to London also aided its development. Today, Gillingham is still a popular town for commuters to London
