Paisley is the largest town in Scotland and is said to have been established by an Irish monk, Saint Mirin. By the mid 19th century it had a thriving weaving and threading industry which lasted until the late 20th century. The town has numerous buildings of architectural interest such as Paisley Abbey, an example of 12th century Gothic architecture. Gothic Revival architecture is exemplified by Thomas Coats Memorial Church while St Matthews Church is an interesting example of Art Noveau. Paisley is represented in the Scottish Premier League by St Mirren FC whose last major success was in 1987 when they won the Scottish Cup. The town is also home to PACE Theatre Company, the UKs largest youth theatre company. Former US president Ronald Regan had roots in Paisley, his maternal great grandfather John Wilson was born here in 1812. A more recent notable associations are singer Paolo Nutini and Doctor Who actor David Tennant
