Llanwrtyd Wells, population 601 in 2001, claims to be the smallest town in Britain however Fordwich in Kent has a smaller population. It is a mecca for cyclists, walkers and pony trekkers that want to enjoy the unspoilt beauty of the surrounding Cumbrian Mountains. Much of its heritage can be traced to the arrival of the Celts in 200BC. The basis of Cymraeg, the Welsh language, was provided by these early settlers. Llanwrtyd Wells grew in the Victorian age as a spa town around the Ffynon Droellwyd spring which still exists today. Many visitors came to enjoy the beneficial water and fresh air of the Welsh countryside and the trend continues today. Llanwrtyd Wells makes a good base for visiting the countrys top agricultural show, the Royal Welsh, which is held in the nearby town of Llanelwedd. The British Motor Rally held in november makes use of the terrain surrounding Llanwrtyd Wells and the world famous Brecon Jazz Festival is just over half an hour away through the Epynt mountains
