Stirling is an ancient Burgh and is a former capital of the Kingdom of Scotland. Scotlands smallest city developed around a castle and is now a centre for government, retail and industry in the Stirling council area. It was orignally a Stone Age settlement located by the River Forth and has historically been of strategic importance hence its reputation as the Gateway to the Highlands. The Stirling countryside has dramtic contrasts ranging from hills and mountains including Ben Ledi and Ben Vordich to the flat expanse of the Carse of Stirling which is one of Scotlands most fertile areas. Other attractions in the city are Ochill Hills and the Wallace National Monument which sits on Abbey Craig, a striking crag amd tail feature. Historically, agriculture has always been a large part of Stirlings economy and it functioned mainly as a market town. Today, financial services via companies such as Prudential and tourism are important employers in the city. The University if Stirling and Stirling council are the biggest employers in the area. Stirling is a major centre of sports training and education in Scotland and the city has professional teams competing in football - Stirling Albion FC, and rugby - Stirling County
