Previously the Roman city of Verulamium, it was the first major town on the old Roman road Watling Street which was used by commuters heading north. St Albans is situated in Hertfordshire and has held a street market in Market Place and St Peters Street several hundred years. The town claims to have the most pubs per square mile in the UK, Edinburgh, Nottingham and Norwich are other claimants. In 2006, Sports England published a survery suggesting that St Albans residents were the 9th most active in the country. The town is home to Pioneer Skatepark, one the oldest and finest indoor skateparks around. The mixed character of St Albans has made it popular for filming, First Knight, Johnny English and some episodes of Inspector Morse all feature the town. The TV series Porridge uses the gate house of the former 19th century prison in its title sequence. There is plenty of evidence of buildings and excavations from all periods of the towns history that adds to St Albans appeal as a tourist destination.
